A variety of support services are available citywide to address the diverse needs and interests of older adults, from those who are active and healthy, to those residing in long-term care facilities and seniors who are fragile and may be confined to home.

Adult Protective Services
The Adult Protective Services Program (APS) helps those who are at risk of abuse aged 60 and older and adults age 18-59 with disabilities living in Chicago’s communities. APS caseworkers investigate reports of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and self-neglect.

The Chicago Department of Family & Support Services links Chicago residents age 60 and better to more than 70 city, state and federal benefits to which they may be entitled
Brain Health
Brain Health is the state of brain functioning across cognitive, sensory, social-emotional, behavioral and motor domains. The Brain Health Series is designed to help adults learn how to reduce risks and maintain a healthy brain.
Care Coordination Unit (CCU's) Referrals
Care Coordination Units (CCUs) serve as central access points for older adults who have intensive long-term care needs.
Chore Services
The Chore Services Program provides supports for older adults to remain linving independently at home.
Congregate Dining Program (Golden Diners Program)
The Golden Diners Program offers older adults (60 years of age and older) and their spouses of any age, an opportunity to have a healthy, nutritious meal each day while enjoying the company of friends at approximately 50 community sites throughout the City of Chicago.
Dementia Care Programs
Caring for loved ones with Dementia can be an everchanging journey. Services and supports including training and education are designed specifically for caregivers in this role.
Education Training and Registration
Education is an important part of the mission of any Area Agency on Aging. Click here to take learn more about citywide education and training programs are offered to senior Chicagoans who are interested in reducing clutter or maintaining their health. If you are helping to care for a person living with Alzheimer’s and related diseases, you can register for any of our dementia care programs here. Additionally, many of our educational programs are offered at Senior Centers, presented through delegate agencies, or viewed online with our Seniors Connected Brochure.
Home Delivered Meals
This program provides nutritious meals to older persons (60 years and older) who are frail and/or home bound because of illness or incapacitating disability or are otherwise isolated.
Insurance Counseling for Seniors (SHIP)
Volunteer counselors with Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) offer free, one-on-one insurance counseling at our Regional Senior Centers.
Intensive Case Advocacy and Support Services (ICAS)
This program serves frail, vulnerable, isolated seniors age 55 and older who need intensive case coordination and support with issues such as hoarding, uninhabitable living conditions, undiagnosed and untreated mental health concerns, limited cognitive abilities and safety. An ICAS worker will work with the senior to establish a safe plan of care and provide referrals for other services as needed.
Legal Assistance
Professional attorneys are available to assist caregivers with various legal issues.
Medicare and Open Enrollment Information
Medicare health and drug plans can change each year. This includes changes to cost, coverage, and which providers and pharmacies are in their networks. Enrolling in Medicare is a milestone! And selecting a Part-D prescription drug plan can be challenging. DFSS’ Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) has trained counselors who can help provide the information you need, whether you are new to Medicare, joining or changing a Part-D Drug plan, or just have questions about Medicare.
Ombudsman Program
The City of Chicago has a dedicated team that represents individuals who live in long-term and residential care facilities (including skilled nursing, assisted living, supportive living, shelter care, and other specialized facilities).
Satellite Senior Centers
The satellite senior centers, part of the Mayor’s vision to keep Chicago’s neighborhoods active, accessible and affordable for Chicago’s senior population, provide services, programs and activities closer to seniors on the neighborhood level.
