Exploring Second Opinions

Getting a second opinion, or going to a second doctor about pregnancy-related issues or questions, is your right as a patient.

When to consider a second opinion

While anyone can seek a second opinion, there are some circumstances where you may benefit most from speaking to another medical professional:

  • Facing a high-risk pregnancy
  • A fetal abnormality diagnosis
  • Difficulty getting pregnant (including through IVF)
  • Your doctor tells you that you have no treatment options or must terminate your pregnancy
  • An unclear diagnosis
  • If you’re uncomfortable with or feel like you can’t trust your doctor

Follow the same process for partnering with your doctor, and use your new information to help make a choice that fits your needs. For example, if you feel like you’re not working well with your current doctor, clearly communicate your needs to the doctor who is offering a second opinion.

Work with your insurance company to determine whether a second opinion is covered.
