Temporary Pop Up
License Overview
Sale of merchandise at temporary shows or in pop up storefronts requires a Pop Up Retail License.
Shows and events of limited duration with multiple vendors such as art fairs, consumer fairs, trade fairs, or expositions: The organizer of the show must obtain a Pop Up License for a specific venue/ location and list out all participating vendors to be included on their single license at that location. Pop Up Businesses at Retail Locations (not shows or events) such as seasonal/ holiday storefront pop ups, pumpkin or Christmas tree lots, or other temporary retail operations: Each pop up business must obtain a Pop Up License. The business may pop up in at allowed retail locations around Chicago.
Events that are located on sidewalks or streets, serve food, or require City services: The event organizer must obtain a Special Event permit from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. The organizer will be prompted to obtain the required Pop Up license as part of the Special Event permitting process.
Related Licenses
- The temporary sale of perishable food requires a Pop Up Food Establishment License.
- Sale of any merchandise that is specially regulated such as tobacco, fuel, or liquor requires a specialized license and may not be done under a Pop Up License.
- A Peddler or Mobile Merchant License is required for the sale of general merchandise from a vehicle or cart.
- A Secondhand Dealer License is required for the sale of certain secondhand merchandise requires.
