The Chicago Department of Planning and Development (DPD) is accepting applications to purchase vacant, City-owned land in East Garfield Park for $1 per parcel through Monday, Aug. 4, 2014.

The land is being offered as the second phase of DPD’s Large Lot pilot program, which was launched this spring in greater Englewood. The initial phase resulted in applications by local property owners for more than 500 City-owned properties.

“Given the program’s success in the Englewood community, we are proud to expand this promising revitalization opportunity to East Garfield Park,” said DPD Commissioner Andrew J. Mooney. “The expansion of the Large Lot program will enable East Garfield Park residents to invest in their communities and transform underutilized land into neighborhood assets.”

Eligible applicants may purchase up to two parcels under the program. Approximately 400 lots are available within the East Garfield Park community.

To qualify, applicants must own property on the same block as the lots they are proposing to purchase; be current on property taxes; and have no financial obligations to the City. Lots proposed for purchase must be owned by the City, be vacant, and have residential (R) zoning. Properties will be sold “as is” via a quit claim deed.

The Large Lot Program is part of the City of Chicago’s “Five Year Housing Plan,” which is investing $1.3 billion in spending from 2014-2018 to create, improve, and preserve more than 41,000 units of housing. DPD developed the plan with help from more than 120 housing experts, activists, builders and owners.

Previously paper-based, one of the improvements for the expansion of the Large Lot program to East Garfield Park is an all-electronic application process.
