A pair of South Side playgrounds would be improved through financing measures proposed to City Council today by Mayor Richard M. Daley.
“TIF is the City’s most versatile and effective economic development tool,” said Mayor Richard M. Daley. “It is important that we continue to invest in our park infrastructure as these facilities play a significant role in the quality of life in our neighborhoods.”
The playground at Wilson Park, 1122 W. 34th Place, would be upgraded with new walking paths, play surfaces, landscaping, and climbing equipment through funds allocated from the 35th/Halsted TIF District. The Wilson Park Advisory Council would contribute $70,000 to the $600,000 cost.
The playground at Blackwelder Park, 11500 S. Homewood Ave., would be relocated to a site adjacent to the park's main entry on 115th Street. The new location would feature modern climbing equipment, landscaping, benches and a water spray feature. As part of the project, the park's ball field and basketball court would receive surface improvements to support their ongoing use by local athletes. The $1.25 million cost would be financed through the 119th/I-57 Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district.
If approved, construction on both projects could be completed by next summer.
