The City of Chicago today announced the launch of its 2010 Facade Rebate Program, which offers rebates to eligible commercial and industrial businesses and property owners who complete qualified facade rehabilitation projects. An eligible “facade” is the front face or elevation of the building, which typically faces the street and contains windows and the principal entrance to the building.

“We are proud to announce this year’s kick off of the program,” says Department of Community Development (DCD) Acting Commissioner Chris Raguso.  “This program directly enhances the neighborhoods throughout Chicago’s 77 communities.  Not only does it improve the actual look of a community, but it allows local business owners to improve their establishments and, hopefully, attract more customers to ultimately benefit the local economy.”

The 2010 Facade Rebate program provides grants up to $20,000 and is funded through the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, which funds projects in low- to moderate-income communities.

Little Black Pearl, a center in Hyde Park, recently received Facade Rebate Program funds. The organization creates opportunities for youth and adults to deepen their creative involvement through the arts, cultivate their entrepreneurial skills and use the arts as a means for economic empowerment and community transformation.  The group utilized the program funds to install 12 canvas “sunbrella” black aluminum awnings mounted to window frames and 12 storefront windows.

“As an entity committed to fostering the arts in our community, we know that aesthetics matter and feel it’s important to maintain the physical appearance of our space,” says Program Director Leon Haslip.  “The City’s support in this way really makes a difference and means a tremendous amount to our organization and the whole community.”

Applications for funds are due by 4 PM on Friday, July 30, 2010.  Applications should be sent to Dionne Baux, Chicago Department of Community Development, 121 N. LaSalle Room 1006, Chicago, IL 60602.
