Canal/Congress TIF

Designation: 1998    Expiration: 2034

The 41-acre Canal/Congress TIF district is intended to coordinate development projects that stabilize and provide cohesion for business and residential expansion projects in the West Loop. Priority projects include the redevelopment of the old Chicago Post Office and the former trading floor of the Mid-America Commodities Exchange. Other goals include the creation of transit-oriented investments in new and existing buildings and the preservation of track and platform capacity under Union Station and the old post office for expanded rail operations. Additionally, the district is designed to promote the development of pedestrian-friendly open spaces along the south branch of the Chicago River and at select locations within the district.
