The last 21 public lots to be used for a proposed 16-acre park in South Chicago were proposed for sale to the Chicago Park District under an ordinance presented to the City Council today by Mayor Richard M. Daley.

The lots, comprising 1.2 acres, are among dozens of parcels the City of Chicago has acquired for the park and subsequently transferred to the Park District since 1998.

“These park projects are part of our commitment to providing open space and recreational opportunities to neighborhoods throughout the City,” Mayor Richard M. Daley said. “Green space and open parkland is an important part of our commitment to the quality of life for all of Chicago’s residents.”

Generally bounded 89th Street, Mackinaw Avenue, Avenue O (Route 41), and Harbor Avenue, the park site is being assembled through a variety of acquisition processes, including negotiated sales with owners, tax foreclosures and condemnation proceedings.

The recent completion of a project to widen and realign Route 41 on the east side of the park site was required before the last public parcels could be transferred to the Park District. Proposed sale price is $1 each.
