A pair of ownership agreements approved by City Council today will ensure long-term, public use of community gardens in South Chicago and Logan Square.

The two 3,000-square-foot garden sites will be sold by the City to the NeighborSpace land trust, which provides liability insurance, water access and technical resources for neighborhood gardening groups.

"In addition to securing these spaces for public use for many years to come, the agreements offer neighbors the unprecedented opportunity to work together in beautifying their communities," Mayor Daley said.

The South Chicago location will be used to expand an existing NeighborSpace garden at 8457 S. Buffalo Ave. The Bush Community Garden of Hope organization will plant pumpkins and strawberries on the added space. The location will also be used for outdoor science work involving students from nearby Sullivan Elementary School.

The Logan Square location, at 2227 N. Monticello Ave., will be managed by the Monticello Avenue Gardeners organization, which has already planted annuals, ornamental trees and raspberry bushes on the site. Additional fencing and raised plant beds will be installed subsequent to the ownership transfer.

The sites are being sold for $1 each.
