Chicago's Reparations Study

On June 17, 2024, Mayor Brandon Johnson signed a historic Executive Order establishing the Reparations Task Force—an essential step toward addressing the historical harms committed against Black Chicagoans and their ancestors through the form of reparations. Led by the Mayor's Office and the Aldermanic Black Caucus, the Task Force will support a historic effort to develop Chicago's first comprehensive Reparations study and community-driven strategy for reparations under Executive Order 2024-1.

Reparations are a necessary commitment to repair the generational harm caused by systemic racism. This work is about creating a more equitable Chicago by building wealth, expanding opportunity, and empowering Black residents.

Our Vision

The City of Chicago envisions a future state it strives to create where identity and social status no longer determine life outcomes for its residents.

Chicago acknowledges the present and historical inequities that persist for Black Chicagoans, which is why the Chicago Reparations Study will:

A. Acknowledge the harmful policies and practices that have harmed Black Chicagoans and their ancestors.

B. Identify appropriate remedies and restitution that include pathways for:

Wealth Building | Economic Opportunity | Affordable Housing | Homeownership

Quality Education  | Community Safety | Community Ownership | Health Equity
