Does My Project Require a Licensed Plumbing Contractor?
Does my project require a licensed plumbing contractor?
A licensed and bonded plumbing contractor is required to perform most types of plumbing work in Chicago. The plumbing contractor, and the individually-licensed plumbers employed by the plumbing contractor, are responsible for ensuring that the permitted plumbing work is performed safely, competently, and in accordance with the scope of the permit and the requirements of the Chicago Construction Codes, including the Chicago Plumbing Code. The licensed plumbing contractor’s bond helps to protect the property owner, neighbors, and the City of Chicago if something goes wrong.
There is one exception:
- A plumbing contractor license is not required for the owner, occupant, or lessee of a detached single-family residence, or the owner of a detached single-family residence under construction for his or her occupancy, to personally install, alter, or repair the plumbing system of his or her residence. All plumbing work must comply with the Chicago Plumbing Code and is subject to inspection. This only allows the owner, occupant, or lessee to perform the plumbing work themselves and does not allow an owner, occupant, or lessee to hire anyone other than a licensed plumbing contractor to perform plumbing work.
