Overview

In 2024, CDOT will install five bus boarding islands from Maplewood Avenue to Washtenaw Avenue. This infrastructure improves bus operations, reduces illegal parking and loading in bus stops, and eliminates the need for buses to cross into the bike lane by providing dedicated space for people to wait for the bus outside of the sidewalk, among other benefits.

Project Goals & Infrastructure Highlights

  • Upgraded CTA bus stops will help improve bus operations by allowing buses to serve a stop without pulling out of and back into traffic and provide more space for transit users.
  • Improved pedestrian experience by providing dedicated space for people to wait for the bus outside of the sidewalk.
  • Reduced crossing distance and increased visibility for people crossing Milwaukee Avenue with refuge islands.
