WHAT: Winter Weather Advisory

Wet snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches. Winds gusting as high as 30 mph. Area includes the Chicago metro and area and portions of central and northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana.

IMPACTS: Plan on slippery road conditions. Hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute on Tuesday, January 9. Drivers are advised to slow down and use caution while traveling.

The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) is ready to respond to snow expected later today. More than 200 salt spreaders will be out on City streets, monitoring conditions on arterial routes, DuSable Lake Shore Drive, as well as city bridges and overpasses, to ensure roads are safe and passable for emergency vehicles, public transportation and other travelers during the morning commute.

The Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) strongly encourages caution while driving and following these safety tips:

· Allow extra time to reach your destination.

· Leave plenty of space between vehicles.

· Have a full tank of gas and let friends and relatives know where you are going.

· Make sure you have an emergency kit in your vehicle with a cell phone charger, flashlight, food, and water.

· Yield to emergency vehicles as well as Streets and Sanitation salt spreaders and plows.

As a reminder, the Overnight Winter Parking Ban is in effect through April on major streets. The ban helps ensure public safety by allowing emergency vehicles, public transportation and other travelers to move freely during snowy and icy weather. Please follow posted signage restrictions. OEMC will monitor weather conditions with the National Weather Service in Chicago and coordinate response efforts with the City’s public safety and infrastructure departments and public partners to keep residents safe and informed.
