Landmark Status Proposed for Eugenie Lane Apartments

Eugenie Lane Apartments in Lincoln Park would be designated as an official Chicago landmark under a recommendation introduced to City Council today by the Commission on Chicago Landmarks.
Designed by Chicago architect Ben Weese and located at 235 W. Eugenie St., the rectangular, four-story building was constructed in 1962 as “an unusual effort to create a high-style, finely designed, modernist building that was contextual and similarly scaled to other buildings within a neighborhood that was already perceived as historic,” according to the Landmarks Commission.
The building’s common brick walls, louvered wood panels and metal mansard roof all reflect features of 19th century architecture while still being characterized as modernist by design.
The landmark designation would protect all exterior elevations, including rooflines, of the 23-unit building.
