Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and CDPH wants to shine a spotlight on common mental health disorders and resources available for treatment. CDPH has several Mental Health Centers that offer in-person therapy, medication management, and telepsychiatry services that are provided free of charge to all Chicagoans. We also partner with dozens of community-based care providers to offer services in all parts of the city.

Mental health disorders, or mood disorders, are medical conditions that disrupt a person's thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning. Things like depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder are common mood disorders. To learn more about mood disorders, common early warning signs, or how you or someone else can seek treatment, visit the CDPH website.

National Nurses Week

National Nurses Week is celebrated annually from May 6-12, the last day being Florence Nightengale's birthday. CDPH is thankful for all nurses, especially those in our public health workforce, for the tireless and selfless work they do!

Over 50 participants attended the recent Chicago Department of Public Health / Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois National Nurses Week Luncheon, honoring all our nurses and the various roles and years of experience and service they've provided. The Luncheon honored the positive impact of nursing on global health challenges and improving global health for all.

New Healthy Chicago Podcast

In the newest episode of the Spanish-language Healthy Chicago podcast, the Commissioner for the Chicago Department of Public Health, Dr. Olusimbo ‘Simbo' Ige, speaks with host Dr. Geraldine Luna about the health inequities impacting the Latino community in Chicago and CDPH's strategies to combat these disparities.

Dr. Ige also talks about how she got the opportunity to spend some time with the indigenous communities in Ecuador and the support she provided in Peru when an earthquake hit the country in 2017. She also mentions who her favorite Latino artist is!
