Traffic Stops At 35th Street To Set Beams For New Pedestrian Bridge

Detour Planned Via Martin Luther King Drive. Drivers Urged to Take Alternate Routes to Avoid Overnight Backups

The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced today that, weather permitting, there will be lane closures and 15-minute full stops on South Lake Shore Drive from 31st to Oakwood Blvd. (39th St.) overnight Friday in Saturday to allow for the placement of a temporary steel frame that will form the concrete structure for the new pedestrian bridge that will span Lake Shore Drive at 35th St. in Bronzeville.

A detour will be in place during these closures via Martin Luther King Drive. CDOT urges drivers to avoid overnight delays by taking alternate routes.

Three of the four lanes on South Lake Shore Drive will be closed starting at 8 p.m. Friday night, April 10th, until approximately noon on Saturday.

The fourth lane will be closed intermittently, creating full stops lasting 15 minutes while beams are hoisted into place.

In case of rain or other unforeseen problems, the closures may be pushed back to Saturday night into Sunday.

The striking new pedestrian and bicycle bridge at 35th St. will be fully ADA accessible and is replacing a deteriorated structure which required users to climb stairs. It is scheduled for completion by summer 2016
