Commitment to Green Printing
Commitment to Green—Because intelligent designs begin with responsible designers, printers and photographers.
Fleet & Facility Management's Graphic Services is committed to the environment and is making efforts to eliminate paper and toxic chemical waste, from design through production. We choose printing products that are environmentally friendly to help lessen factors that contribute to air, land and water pollution. Every job we print, design or photograph has been thoughtfully produced, keeping in mind our footprint on this planet.
We are a GREEN PRINTER
Our commitment to the environment has been noted by the State of Illinois’ Great Printers Project. This project recognizes printers that meet the terms of all environmental, health and safety laws, and work with suppliers, employees, customers and the Environmental Protection Agency to improve waste reduction, and build a healthier and cleaner environment.
Being a green printer is more than “reduce, reuse, and recycle.” Like any industry we impact all aspects of the environment: air, land and water. We have made the commitment to reduce that impact and in turn have created a better working environment, reduced costs and challenged ourselves to keep finding alternatives for the future.
Air Filtration System
This system helps to eliminate harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are found in most printing solutions and cleaning chemicals; when evaporated into the air they are hazardous to employees, as well as to the environment outside our pressroom.
Conserve Ink
We sequence jobs by color to conserve ink and to reduce ink waste.
No Chemicals
Our photography section has eliminated its use of toxic chemicals and is devoted to digital photography.
Online Image Gallery
Our intranet image gallery saves time and paper waste by eliminating photo contact sheets or printing multiple samples. Viewers from different locations can see photos within hours of shooting an event. Design and image archives can also be viewed on our intranet for reordering or choosing images for use in communication materials.
Paper Conservation
We encourage the use of two-sided copies and standard paper sizes to reduce the amount of paper used in any given project. By suggesting small ways to conserve such as the use of overstocked paper or a lower paper weight we reduce paper consumption.
Paper Recycling
Reducing paper waste is a priority. Every day we recycle trim waste, overruns and any printed materials that are not up to our quality standards.
Pdf Technology
We create pdf photography and soft proofs reducing the amount of paper used in the proofing process.
Recycle Chemicals
All chemicals that are used in the print shop are brought to a refining facility that processes the products for further use.
Recycle Ink
Leftover ink is collected and recycled to make fuel that powers machines such as cement-makers.
Safer Chemicals
When printing we use chemicals that are made with reduced VOC levels which give off fewer harmful pollutants.
Soy-based Ink
We use soy-based ink. The common soybean is used to produce oil that replaces or reduces the use of petroleum in many petroleum-based products, such as ink. Soybeans are an environmentally safe and renewable resource. Soy-based inks are also easier to remove from paper with less toxic cleaners when paper is recycled.
Thermo Plate
The next level of digital platemaking, this technology is completely chemistry-free. It uses ThermoFuse technology to physically bond images to the plate without any chemical processing.
Water Conservation
Conventional offset printing requires water for plate processing and for the press dampening system. DI printing does not use water. The chemically tainted wastewater from traditional offset printing is eliminated.
Waterless DI printing
This Technology is used to produce our full color printing needs. The PDF file is sent directly to the press where all four plates are simultaneously imaged in precise register. This process greatly reduces waste and improves set up times. From an ecological perspective, this waste saving gains importance when you consider that one tree is equivalent to only two hundred thirty-six 11" x 17" brochures printed on 100 lb. cover stock.
