Vehicle Services

Providing vehicle services requires a City of Chicago business license. There are several vehicle service license types. Depending on the business activities conducted, more than one license may be required.
A commercial garage license is required for any location where four or more vehicles are parked for a fee.
A valet license is required to offer valet parking service to patrons of a business.
The rental or sale of vehicles requires a Limited Business License for vehicle rental or sales.

A motor vehicle repair license is required for any location that repairs vehicles, conducts auto-body work, replaces parts, or diagnoses malfunctions. A motor vehicle repair license is also required for any place where tires are stored, altered, disposed of, replaced or repaired.

A filling station license is required for any establishment where vehicles are refueled.

A private booting license is required for any private business that places a boot or other mechanical device on a vehicle that is designed to prevent the vehicle from moving.

A City of Chicago Tow Truck License is required to tow damaged or disabled vehicles from the public way and store towed vehicles in a tow storage lot.
For-hire vehicles such as taxicabs, liveries, charter buses, and ambulances that transport passengers – as well as anyone who drives such vehicles – must obtain a City of Chicago public vehicle license or chauffeur license. For more information, see the Public Passenger Vehicles webpage. Public Vehicle licenses are processed at the BACP Public Vehicle offices at 2350 W Ogden Ave.
