USSS Begins Canvassing Neighborhoods, Businesses Ahead of 2024 Democratic National Convention

CHICAGO – In an effort to minimize disruptions during the 2024 Democratic National Convention, the United States Secret Service on Monday began soliciting input from nearby residents and businesses who could be affected by the event’s security plan.

Teams began walking door-to-door conducting outreach efforts with residents who may work or live within the possible DNC security perimeter. The goal of the Secret Service’s canvassing efforts is to seek input, answer any questions and address possible concerns from area residents while developing the convention’s security plan.

Secret Service and FBI personnel, along with representatives from the City of Chicago, the Chicago Police Department and Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management, and the Chicago 2024 Host Committee took part in surveying the needs of residents and businesses located near McCormick Place. Additional canvassing efforts around the United Center are scheduled for April 11.

The DNC is scheduled from Aug. 19 through Aug. 22 at the United Center and McCormick Place.

The DNC’s official security perimeter is still in development. Once finalized, information regarding traffic, parking and other potential impacts will be made public.

As part of the agency’s canvassing efforts, the Secret Service released general impact maps, outlining the areas surrounding the convention that could be affected by the convention’s security plan.

The maps (shown below) are tentative and do not contain exact security measures, such as street closures or checkpoints. They are intended to help the public prepare for the upcoming convention by providing initial information on whether residents’ homes, businesses or commutes might be affected by the security plan.

To view the general impact maps, go to the City of Chicago Office of Emergency Management’s webpage at: Chicago.gov/OEMC. The city also has established a dedicated email address for members of the media to send security related questions during the convention, DNCMedia@cityofchicago.org

Individuals will have multiple opportunities in the months leading up to the convention to speak with the Secret Service and its partners about the security plan and how it could affect them.
