Juneteenth Celebrations, Janet Jackson and Northerly Island Concerts Mid-Week Amid Hot Temperatures

June 18, 2024

Residents and participants are reminded to be aware in crowds and report suspicious activity to 9-1-1

CHICAGO – With the Juneteenth holiday on Wednesday and events and gatherings taking place, the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) is reminding residents and motorists of the increased traffic impacts and crowds.  Also, those attending events and out and about should be prepared for the summer weather as the hot and humid conditions continue throughout the week.
 Tips to Beat the Heat
  • Stay hydrated while waiting in lines or attending events – drink lots of water, AVOID alcohol, caffeine, sodas.
  • Wear loose, light, cotton clothing.
  • Do not leave anyone, including pets, in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
  • Keep pets hydrated as well.
  • Wear sunscreen, sunglasses and/or hat to shield the sun’s effects.
  • Keep updated on weather conditions for changing hazards.
  • Adhere to the warnings of officials at the beach or at public events.
  • Know the signs of heat illness and seek shelter or help.
  • Only swim in designated locations with lifeguards on site.
Report suspicious activity: Protecting our public spaces, event venues, and beaches is a joint effort and reporting any suspicious objects, persons, or activity to 9-1-1 immediately can help save lives. If you ever see something that appears intentionally Hiddenobviously strange or unusual, or typically out of place for that location (The HOT Principle) or if you are ever unsure of a potential threat, please call 9-1-1 right away.  Be especially vigilant in crowds and high-profile events and be sure to know your location and egress options in the event of an emergency.
