Christmas Decoration Guidelines
According to the Municipal Code of Chicago (Sections 2-36-270, 2-36-280, 15-4-090, and 15-4-990), the use of fresh natural Christmas trees is prohibited within schools, hospitals, institutional buildings, nursing homes, hotels, public assembly occupancies, shopping malls, department stores and indoor flea markets. The reason for this is because of the ever-present hazard and increasing number of fires caused by fresh natural Christmas trees, wreaths and decorations.
Artificial trees manufactured from safe non-combustible material may be substituted instead. Lighting should be of the "Spot" type lights that are approved for such use by the Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.
If a non-metallic, non-combustible tree is used, it would be permissible to use approved miniature lights. All other decorations on Christmas trees or in the immediate area of such trees should be of non-combustible or fire resistive materials.
Care should be taken so that decorations are not placed near heat- producing
appliances.
Christmas trees, wreaths or decorations of any kind should not be placed in stairways, landings, corridors or other places contiguous with areas providing normal egress.
Extension cords and power strips shall be of the size and type recommended for use by the Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.
ENJOY A FIRE SAFE HOLIDAY SEASON!
