Automated Speed Enforcement Cameras To Issue Tickets In Children's Safety Zones Near Four Schools This Week
New Cameras to Issue Warnings Near Clemente High School and Christopher Elementary
Speeding tickets will begin to be issued this week from Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras in the Children’s Safety Zones near Morgan Park and St. Rita High School, while the 30-day warning period will begin for the new cameras near Roberto Clemente High School and Christopher Elementary.
On Friday, February 21st, the ASE cameras near St. Rita at 2603 W. 79th Street, and near Morgan Park High School at 11144 & 1153 S. Vincennes Ave. will begin to issue tickets.
On Tuesday, February 26th, the cameras near St. Genevieve Elementary at 4843 W. Fullerton Ave. and near the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences at 3843 W. 111th St. will also begin to issue tickets.
In most locations, one camera system can enforce the speed limit for traffic traveling in both directions. In the Morgan Park zone, Vincennes is too wide to rely on one system, necessitating two cameras to accurately enforce traffic traveling in both directions.
The City will start enforcement by only issuing tickets for speeders going 10 or more miles per hour over the posted speed limit. That ticket threshold will gradually be lowered going forward.
Fines for violations are $35 for vehicles traveling 6-10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit while in a safety zone, and $100 for vehicles traveling 11 or more miles over the posted speed limit.
On Monday, February 25th, newly installed ASE cameras near Roberto Clemente High School, at 1229 & 1226 N. Western Ave. and 2329 W. Division St., and near Christopher Elementary, at 2445 & 2440 W. 51st St. and 5025 S. Western Ave., will begin to issue warnings to motorists for a 30-day period before switching to tickets.
