Milwaukee Avenue Reconstruction Resumes March 6 with New Traffic Patterns in Logan Square
The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced that construction is resuming on the Milwaukee Avenue Roadway Reconstruction and Streetscape improvement project for the 2025 season. The project includes the full reconstruction of Milwaukee Avenue from Belmont Avenue to Logan Square, creating new public outdoor spaces and enhancing safety for all road users. Several traffic pattern changes will be implemented.
Logan Square Traffic Circle
Starting the morning of Thursday, March 6, weather permitting, CDOT’s contractor will implement a new traffic pattern at the Logan Square traffic circle to facilitate planned improvements, including a new pedestrian plaza on Milwaukee Avenue. The following changes will take effect:
- Permanent closure of Milwaukee Avenue through Logan Square Park. The short segment of Milwaukee Avenue that bisects Logan Square park will be permanently closed to vehicle traffic. Traffic on Milwaukee will be re-routed around the traffic circle in its current counter-clockwise traffic direction during this stage of construction.
- Traffic circulating the Logan Square traffic circle will be redirected to the outer lanes. This will create a work zone for reconstruction of the inner lanes. During this phase, no parking will be permitted at any time along select areas around the outer perimeter of the traffic circle.
- The east (northbound) Kedzie service drive will be closed to through traffic at Logan just south of the traffic circle. This block of the east Kedzie service drive between Logan Boulevard and Linden Place will be converted to two-way, local-only traffic.
- Traffic signal modifications. The two existing traffic signals along Milwaukee on the north side of the traffic circle will be consolidated into a single temporary traffic signal. All of the traffic signals adjacent to the Logan Square traffic circle will be reconfigured and re-timed to accommodate the permanent closure of the short segment of Milwaukee Avenue through the Square.
Implementation of these traffic changes will take the full day. During that day, motorists should expect additional short-term lane closures while crews modify traffic signals, lane striping, and construction barricades. Once implemented, this temporary traffic pattern is expected to remain in place into summer.
Milwaukee Avenue from Diversey/Kimball to Kedzie Avenue
Beginning Monday, March 10, weather permitting, traffic pattern changes will be implemented along Milwaukee Avenue between Diversey/Kimball and Kedzie to facilitate sidewalk replacement, curb and gutter replacement, conduit installation, and street light installation as part of the planned improvements. The following changes will take effect:
- Two lanes of traffic will shift to the north half of Milwaukee Avenue between Diversey/Kimball and Kedzie Avenue and establish their work zone on the south half of Milwaukee Avenue.
- Work will progress from west to east until mid-summer, at which point construction will flip to construct the north half of the roadway.
- During this time, there will be no parking along this segment of Milwaukee Ave.
Pedestrian access, as well as access to businesses, residences, and CTA buses and trains, will be maintained throughout construction.
