The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced today that a lane closure will be put into effect on northbound Lower Lake Shore Drive as the Navy Pier Flyover reaches a new stage. As a result, pedestrians and bike riders will be using one protected traffic lane of the Lake Shore Drive Bridge while work proceeds on construction of a new section of the Lakefront Trail crossing the Chicago River.
Starting Monday, February 3, weather permitting, the far right lane of northbound Lower Lake Shore Drive will be closed after the AM rush in order to set up a protected 9-foot wide path for pedestrians and bikers. It will take several days of work before this temporary pedestrian and bike lane can be opened up for use.
Under this configuration, there will be only one northbound lane for vehicles on Lower Lake Shore Drive. Drivers are urged to take alternate routes to avoid delays. The flyover portion of the pedestrian and bike bridge project, which carries the Lakefront Trail over Illinois and Grand streets, was opened in late 2018.
The current phase of project involves retrofitting the existing LSD Bridge with a cantilever structure on the east side of the span that will allow for widening the trail to eliminate the existing bottlenecks users encounter. The project also involves structural and mechanical repairs to the movable bascule bridge.
