DuSable Lake Shore Drive Viaduct Repairs Beginning September 25; Traffic Impacts on Upper-Level DLSD Starting October 9
The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) today announced repair work on the DuSable Lake Shore Drive Bridge and viaduct network over the Ogden Slip just north of the Chicago River beginning on September 25 and expected to last until Summer 2024. The project includes the removal and replacement of structural steel hanger assemblies and expansion joints essential for the bridge’s preservation.
- Beginning Monday September 25 at 9:00 a.m., lower level DuSable Lake Shore Drive between Randolph Street and Grand Avenue will be reduced to two lanes in each direction.
- Beginning October 9, upper level DuSable Lake Shore Drive between Monroe Street and Ontario Street will be reduced to three lanes in each direction, with additional lane closures during off-peak hours.
Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and construction signage when entering and driving through work zones.

Two Month Ramp Closure on Northbound Lower-Level DuSable Lake Shore Drive
Beginning Wednesday, January 10, the ramp connecting northbound lower-level DuSable Lake Shore Drive (DLSD) to upper level DLSD will be fully closed to traffic as part of the ongoing viaduct repair project. The ramp, which is located just north of the Chicago River before the Ogden Slip, will remain closed for approximately two months to facilitate expansion joint rehabilitation and pin and link plate replacement.
Motorists will detour by continuing northbound on lower-level DLSD then taking Grand Avenue to access upper-level DLSD.

Beginning Monday, January 29, the ramp connected southbound lower-level DuSable Lake Shore Drive (DLSD) to upper level DLSD will be fully closed to traffic as part of the ongoing viaduct repair project. The ramp, which is located south of Chicago River, will remain closed for approximately two months to facilitate expansion joint rehabilitation and pin and link plate replacement.
Motorists will detour by continuing on Lower Level DLSD to Intermediate Wacker Drive to Intermediate Columbus Drive to Intermediate Randolph Street to Southbound Upper DLSD.
