CHICAGO - The Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) today announced the official start of the City’s annual street sweeping season. Throughout the season, crews will work daily to clear debris and litter from residential streets citywide.

“It is critical we maintain the cleanliness of our streets. However, the department is cognizant that it may be difficult for residents to move vehicles during the Governor's Stay at Home Order,” said DSS Commissioner John Tully.  “Because of this, DSS will not be enforcing the no parking postings related to street sweeping at this time.”

Beginning Monday May 18, DSS street sweepers will be working to clear debris and leaves that have accumulated during winter months from residential and arterial streets across the City. More than 50 sweepers are working in communities each day of the season to ensure that every area of the City receives this service.

If residents are unable to move their car, they will not be fined or ticketed as long as the Governor’s Stay at Home Order remains in effect.  Since April 1^st, all 50 wards have had street sweepers, but not for scheduled cleanings and DSS was not posting for parking restrictions. 

Residents are reminded to check for bright orange signs posted in advance announcing temporary parking restrictions during street sweeping season. Some streets also have permanently posted signs that specify a once-per-week period when parking is prohibited for street sweeping during the season.
