Mayor Brandon Johnson Statement Regarding Illinois General Assembly Hemp Bill
Mayor's Press Office 312.744.3334
CHICAGO – “This week, the IL General Assembly’s House Democrats remained steadfast in their commitment to young people as it relates to the necessary regulation of hemp, delta-8, and synthetic intoxicants. The work to address safety and regulation at state and local levels related to hemp continues. Our communities require legislation that addresses concerns related to minor consumption, as well as opportunities for regulation that support entrepreneurs and municipalities,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson.
“Ensuring a diversity of voices are present in the discussion will help to avoid unintended consequences and arrive at an agreement on safety goals that preserve local flexibility.”
“The leadership of the Chicago delegation in Springfield was critical in ensuring the communities of Chicago and other municipalities were central to the conversation. My team remains eager to be at the table with partners to develop and pass legislation that appropriately regulates hemp products, because our young people are depending on us. We must prioritize communities, while ensuring our negotiations do not unnecessarily create winners and losers in the industry.”
