Mayor's Press Office    312.744.3334

Mayor Brandon Johnson today joined Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) Commissioner Tom Carney, 35th Ward Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, and members of the Logan Square community to celebrate the start of construction of the Milwaukee Avenue Roadway Reconstruction and Streetscape improvement project. This $27 million project will reconstruct Milwaukee Avenue from Belmont Avenue to Logan Square and create new public outdoor spaces while increasing safety for all road users.
"Today, we are celebrating a great milestone for our city and the Logan Square community," said Mayor Brandon Johnson. "The Milwaukee Avenue Streetscape Improvement Project is not just about rebuilding a roadway; it is about creating a safer, more inviting space that supports local businesses, enhances pedestrian safety, and celebrates the cultural heritage of this community. I am excited to see the positive impact this project will have on residents and visitors alike."
Project highlights include:
  • Reconfiguration of Logan Square to increase public space, improve pedestrian access, and enhance safety for people walking, biking, and driving.  This includes protected off-street bicycle paths around the Square.
  • The creation of La Placita, a new plaza adjacent to the Logan Square Blue Line Station. Designed based on feedback from local residents and community groups, La Placita celebrates Latin American heritage and will feature seating areas and space for community activities.
  • Full roadway reconstruction, including sidewalk, curb and gutter.
  • Wider sidewalks and curb extensions to create more space for outdoor dining at local restaurants.
  • Raised crosswalks, curb extensions, and pedestrian refuge islands to enhance pedestrian safety and encourage safer driving speeds.
  • Modernized traffic signals to improve traffic flow and safety.
  • New streetlights and parkway trees along the corridor.
I am thrilled that the Milwaukee Streetscape and Logan Square Centennial Redesign projects are commencing after many years of community advocacy and planning,” said Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa. “This is a monumental investment in our community, and it will give residents greater access to public spaces and safe modes of transportation for decades to come.”

"CDOT worked closely with the 35th Ward and community stakeholders throughout the design of this project, and we look forward to seeing it come to life," said CDOT Commissioner Tom Carney. “This project represents a collaborative effort to transform our streets and create a safer and more inviting Milwaukee Avenue for the Logan Square and Avondale communities.”

Construction is expected to be complete by summer 2026. Information can be found here
