CHICAGO — Today, Mayor Brandon Johnson announced that Pastor Billy Jermale Evans will serve as the City of Chicago’s Chief of Faith Engagement.

“I’m proud to welcome Pastor Evans as our Chief of Faith Engagement and look forward to his partnership in strengthening communities and improving lives through faith-based outreach,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “As the son of two pastors, I know first-hand how churches and faith communities serve as foundations of service, family and hope for people, and provide purpose in our lives. Pastor Evans’ deep roots in Chicago’s faith community and professional experience working with youth will only help us further our work in serving and investing and people, and he will be an integral part of our team.”

“Born and raised in Chicago, my faith has served as the foundation of my life, and I’m proud that my faith has now called me to serve the city I know and love,” said Pastor Billy Evans. “Churches are beacons of our communities and provide our families and neighbors with resources, nurture and care. I look forward to working in partnership with Chicago’s faith community to strengthen the Johnson Administration’s connection to our residents and help implement their priorities for the city.”  

In 2015, Pastor Evans was selected by Bishop Cody V. Marshall to serve as his successor at the Freedom Temple Church of God in Christ. Under his leadership, the church has seen tremendous growth and continues to be a beacon of hope in the Englewood community.  

Pastor Evans has also served as a College and Career Coach at Chicago Academy High School, Director of School Improvement at Walter H. Dyett High School, College and Career Specialist for Chicago Public Schools and Dean of Students for Brooks College Prep High School.
