CHICAGO — Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot today announced Joyce Chapman as a new member of the Chicago Board of Education. For more than two decades, Joyce Chapman has been a strong community leader with a long history of involvement across Chicago and has been actively involved in the Pullman education community, including serving as the founder and president of the Pullman Community Development Corporation, and more recently as the chairwoman of the Far South CAC. Mayor Lightfoot selected Joyce because of her commitment and dedication to improving life outcomes and opportunities for our young people and communities. 

“Chicago's families have tackled many challenges in the past few years, which makes it that much more necessary for our Board of Education to be made up of a knowledgeable team that will stop at nothing to help them and the students in their care access the resources they need,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “With Joyce Chapman as a member of our Board of Education, I am confident that our students will continue to have a quality education regardless of where they live in our city.” 

As a life-long resident of Chicago and a proud graduate of Chicago Public Schools, Ms. Chapman has served her community over the past several decades as the founder and president of the Pullman Community Development Corporation, chairwoman for the Far South Community Advisory Council, Neighborhood Housing Services Board Vice Chair, President of the Gately Park Advisory Council, and for ten years, Joyce served as the CAPS Beat 512 Facilitator for the Chicago Police Department of the 5th District.  

“Joining the Chicago Board of Education is an immense honor that will allow me to serve Chicago families across the city,” said Joyce Chapman. “As a board member, I will continue to use my experiences for the schools to have access to the resources needed for academic success."  

The addition of Joyce Chapman to the Board of Education will help ensure that the board is inclusive and can offer viewpoints from all of our City’s diverse communities to make Chicago more prosperous, stronger, and more equitable for all its residents and the thousands of students and teachers through her role. The City of Chicago and the Board of Education are grateful to count on Joyce’s years of experience, commitment, and leadership. We look forward to the service and commitment Joyce will provide our thousands of students and teachers through this role. Joyce Chapman will be a part of the Board of Education starting June 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023.
