Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Police Department (CPD) Superintendent Eddie Johnson today announced the department’s first deployments of 2019, with 99 new police officers assigned to neighborhoods across Chicago.

"Every month, more officers are hitting the streets in neighborhoods across Chicago to work in a partnership with residents against crime," said Mayor Emanuel. "While our investments to grow the Chicago Police Department by close to 1,000 new officers and equip them with the best training, tools and technology have helped lead to double digit decreases in shootings and homicides for two consecutive years, we still have much more work to do."

The deployments reflect the operational needs and public safety strategies of CPD with more than two-thirds of the officers being assigned to districts headquartered in South and West side neighborhoods. The Districts receiving officers include: 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 11, 16, 20, 22 and 25.

“The additional officers will help carry our positive momentum into 2019," said Supt. Johnson. “We will continue evaluating our efforts, deploying resources and making adjustments as needed, to ensure our city is safe for every Chicagoan, regardless of district or neighborhood.”

The deployment announcement follows a second consecutive year of citywide reductions in overall crime, with fewer murders, shootings, robberies, burglaries and vehicle thefts throughout 2018 than in 2017.

The 99 new officers deploying citywide were part of the City of Chicago’s two-year hiring plan to add 970 additional officers to the Chicago Police Department. Since the start of 2017, CPD has grown by over 1,000 sworn officers, with 2,352 new officers hired over the same period.
