Today, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Police Department (CPD) Superintendent Eddie Johnson announced that 117 new police officers have been deployed to their district assignments as part of the plan to grow the Department by nearly 1,000 police officers.

“These officers have trained in the Academy and in the field and are dedicated to being part of the communities they have sworn to protect and serve,” said Mayor Emanuel. “We are one city with one future, standing up and working together for the values we share.”

After successfully completing their training at the Academy and initial field training, these officers are now being sent to their first district assignments. District 3 (Grand Crossing) will receive nine new officers, District 4 (South Chicago) will receive nine new officers, District 5 (Calumet) will receive 12 new officers, District 6 (Gresham) will receive 15 new officers, District 7 (Englewood) will receive seven new officers, District 8 (Chicago Lawn) will receive nine new officers, District 9 (Deering) will receive nine new officers, District 10 (Ogden) will receive nine new officers, District 11 (Harrison) will receive nine new officers, District 14 (Shakespeare) will receive two new officers, District 15 (Austin) will receive two new officers, District 16 (Jefferson Park) will receive two new officers, District 19 (Town Hall) will receive nine new officers, District 22 (Morgan Park) will receive five new officers, and District 25 (Grand Central) will receive nine new officers.

“Today, city-wide, Chicagoans are welcoming new police officers that have been trained to focus their efforts on making our streets safer and building partnerships with residents to become viable community police officers,” said Superintendent Johnson.  “These new officers have received training based upon best practices in law enforcement and will be among the first officers to receive annual training throughout their entire career. This is an exciting time to join CPD and I encourage anyone who wants to help us make this department and our city better, to apply during this application period.”

Since January of 2018, 771 new officers have been deployed to their first district assignments. During six months in the police academy, recruits learn all applicable laws and protocols for being a Chicago Police Officer. In addition to physical training, they receive instruction in procedural justice, crisis intervention and de-escalation, use of force, cultural awareness, community building and critical thinking. This was followed by three months of field training, during which officers are paired with Field Training Officers for hands-on guidance during their first in-the-field months.

These new officers have joined as part of CPD’s ongoing “Be the Change” recruitment campaign, which reflects the belief that this new generation of police officers will lay the groundwork for a more diverse department and be future leaders who define how police support, protect and work together with Chicago's communities.

The City is now accepting applications for the next Police Entry Exam. The December 2018 exam will be the fifth test administered under the Emanuel administration, with increasingly concerted efforts made to expand the diversity of applicants and make the exam more accessible.
