Happy New Year, Chicago!

The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) plans to make this year Chicago’s best ever as we work to make our city the healthiest city in the nation. All year long, we will provide you with resources, tools and opportunities to help you live a healthier life. Listed below is information to help you meet your personal resolutions, so together we can start the year right!

Short-Term Rent, Mortgage, and Utility assistance

Short-Term Rent, Mortgage, and Utility (STRMU) assistance is time-limited housing assistance designed to prevent homelessness and increase housing stability. The delegate agency providing Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) and Short-Term Rent, Mortgage, and Utility (STRMU) throughout the Chicago EMSA is the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC).

Quit Smoking

The number of Chicagoans who smoke is steadily dropping every year thanks in part to the programs sponsored by CDPH – but there’s still more work to do. If you’re looking to kick the habit this year, we’re here to help with simple steps and support on how you can live a longer, healthier life. Get started by calling the Illinois Tobacco Quitline at 866-QUIT-YES or visit www.quityes.org.

Get A Mammogram

Women over the age of 40 should have a breast screening every three years. CDPH provides free exams for Chicago residents at locations across the city. The best way to stop cancer is early detection, so make sure to take charge of your health now and schedule an appointment.

Eat Healthier

We’re working hard to improve access to healthy snacks and beverages across the city. Last month, the City Council approved a new plan ensuring that at least 75% of all vending machine choices in city buildings are healthy – and affordable. This follows similar initiatives to provide healthier food options in both our schools and parks. We’re also working with other City agencies to identify communities with little to no access to fresh food and grocery stores as part of our effort to ensure every Chicagoan has access to healthy food.

Exercise More

Looking to get in better shape? CDPH provides free fitness classes for community members of all ages every week in neighborhoods across the city. Everyone can get healthy through our low impact aerobics and dance classes. For information on a class in your neighborhood, contact Yolanda Vazquez at 312-745-1640.
