Crews from Streets & Sanitation's Bureau of Street Operations clean thousands of vacant lots every year. Our costs are recouped in part by ticket issuance and administrative hearing follow-ups with owners of these neglected properties. The Vacant Lot Cleaning Program utilizes heavy equipment and our crews to clear the lots of weeds and dangerous debris. Quite often the debris dumped on vacant lots or in the public way is the result of fly dumpers seeking to avoid having to pay for proper disposal of waste materials.
