Mayor Brandon Johnson and The City of Chicago Unveil Monthly Workforce Vacancy Data, Boosting Transparency

New Data Initiative Provides Insights into City Workforce Vacancies via City’s Data Portal

CHICAGO – Mayor Brandon Johnson and the City of Chicago’s Office of Budget and Management (OBM) is proud to announce the launch of its Workforce Vacancy Data Dashboard on OBM’s website. This interactive tool provides an accessible, user-friendly way to explore and filter vacancy data across all City departments. For the first time, this data will be updated on the first of each month and publicly available in an intuitive format that enhances visibility and usability. The underlying data is also be available on the City of Chicago’s Open Data Portal for those who need full datasets. 

 “Transparency and accountability are at the heart of this administration,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said.  “By making this workforce data public, we are holding ourselves accountable and equipping our communities with the tools to demand better from their government. This initiative reflects our commitment to a more just, responsive and people-centered city where budget decisions are driven by transparency and the needs of our residents, not bureaucracy.”  

 This forward-thinking initiative, designed to enhance transparency and accountability across City departments, not only aligns with data transparency best practices but also responds directly to aldermanic requests for enhanced accessibility to budget data – giving City officials the ability to better evaluate staffing and key financial insights ahead of the annual budget season. The underlying data can also be downloaded on the City’s Open Data Portal. 

 “The launch of our monthly Workforce Vacancy Data Dashboard marks a significant milestone in our transparency efforts,” said Budget Director Annette Guzman. “This tool will provide essential insights into our city’s staffing landscape, enabling more informed decisions and strategic planning for the budget season ahead.” 

 This effort builds on the administration’s broader push to ensure city resources are used equitably and efficiently. By shedding light on workforce vacancies, the City is empowering aldermen, advocates, and the public with critical insights that can help shape hiring decisions, streamline services, and, ultimately, strengthen the delivery of city services to residents. 

 “Having access to this information is a game-changer,” said 28th Ward Alderman and Committee of Budget and Government Operations Chairman Jason Ervin. “It equips us with the insight needed to understand our workforce hiring trends and better allocate resources during the budget process. I’m excited about the positive impact the release of this data will have on our communities.” 

 The Workforce Vacancy Data Dashboard provides insight into current job vacancies across city departments, serving as a vital resource for tracking staffing levels.
