CHICAGO – Mayor Brandon Johnson is proud to announce the appointment of Marlene Hopkins as the new Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Buildings (DOB). With over 25 years of dedicated service to the City of Chicago, including 18 years in leadership roles within the DOB, Hopkins brings a wealth of experience, a deep commitment to economic development, and a passion for reinvestment in the community to her new role.

“Marlene Hopkins is a proven leader whose dedication to public service and visionary approach to city development have been invaluable to Chicago,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “Her extensive experience and commitment to collaboration make her the ideal choice to lead the Department of Buildings as we work towards a safer, more prosperous Chicago for all.”

During her tenure with the Department of Buildings, Hopkins has been instrumental in managing the day-to-day operations of the third largest Building Department in the country. She has played a crucial role in the rewrite of the Chicago Construction Codes, aligning them with industry standards and developing effective code enforcement strategies to improve the quality of life in our communities. As First Deputy Commissioner, Hopkins has been responsible for ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, managing significant budgets, and fostering economic development through efficient permit issuance and inspections.

Hopkins holds a Master’s degree in Legal Studies with a focus on Criminal Justice from Trinity International University and a Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Roosevelt University. Her educational background, combined with her extensive experience in the field, positions her to effectively lead the DOB in its mission to ensure the safety and integrity of buildings throughout the city.
