Nearly 100 Police Officers Will Be Deployed To Neighborhoods
87 new officers deployed to 10 districts across the city
Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Police Department (CPD) Superintendent Eddie Johnson today announced that 87 new police officers have been deployed to their district assignments as part of the hiring plan to add nearly 1,000 more officers.
“Chicago is grateful that these new officers are choosing to pay their rent through service to this city,” said Mayor Emanuel. “The officers hitting the streets, along with the training and technology that will support their work, represent part of larger effort to improve public safety that includes additional after-school programs, summer jobs, mentors, and economic opportunity in our neighborhoods.”
After successfully completing their training at the Academy and initial field training, 87 new Chicago Police officers are now being sent to their first detail. Since January of 2018, 858 PPO’s have been deployed to their district assignments. The breakdown of the city-wide deployment is below:
District | Deployed Officers |
District 1 (Central) | 8 |
District 2 (Wentworth) | 8 |
District 4 (South Chicago) | 10 |
District 6 (Gresham) | 10 |
District 7 (Englewood) | 10 |
District 9 (Deering) | 10 |
District 11 (Harrison) | 8 |
District 18 (Near North) | 8 |
District 24 (Rogers Park) | 5 |
“Today, neighborhoods across the City are welcoming new police officers that have been trained to focus their efforts on making our streets safer and building partnerships with residents to become true community police officers,” said Superintendent Johnson. “These new officers have received training based upon best practices in law enforcement and will be among the first officers to receive annual training throughout their entire career. This is an exciting time to join CPD and I encourage anyone who wants to help us make this Department better to apply during this application period.”
Over the last two years, nearly 100 new police recruits have entered the CPD Academy each month for a six-month training, where they learn all applicable laws and protocols for being a Chicago Police Officer. In addition to physical training, they receive instruction in procedural justice, crisis intervention and de-escalation, use of force, community building and critical thinking. This is followed by three months of field training, during which officers are paired with Field Training Officers for hands-on guidance during their first in-the-field months.
The City is now accepting applications for the next Police Entry Exam through October 1st. Candidates can register online to take the Police Entry Exam at: www.chicagopolice.org/bethechange.
