Pelvic Examination and Pap Smear

Pelvic examination and pap smear are provided to women as needed.

A woman is eligible for the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (IBCCP) services if the following criteria are met:

  • 40-64 years of age (for breast cancer screening services)
  • 35-64 years of age (for cervical cancer screening services)
  • Noninsured
  • Underinsured
  • Not receiving services through Medicare Part B

Women who are younger than the above categories and have symptoms (i.e. breast lump identified by a Clinical Breast Examination, history of abnormal pap tests, etc.) may be enrolled in the IBCCP. They must meet insurance guidelines.

Pap Smear Screening:

A  Pap test is a simple test that checks for cell changes in the cervix that could become cancer.

Although you may feel healthy, abnormal changes can appear without any symptoms. That is why it is important to get Pap tests regularly You should get a pap test every 1 to 3 years. Depending on your results, your medical provider may suggest getting tested more often.·Abnormal Pap test results do not mean that you have cancer. It may only mean that your medical provider needs to do more tests.

The Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (IBCCP) is available at all neighborhood health centers to pay for services.
