Vacant Building De-Registration Process

This process is applicable for buildings that have registered under the Chicago Vacant Buildings Ordinance

Deregistration is allowed only for the following reasons: Reoccupation, Demolition, Sale, or Release of Lien. The initial registrant has to notify City of these conditions (or planned conditions) via the Vacant Building website: https://ipiweb.cityofchicago.org/vbr/

Reoccupation

Upon notification through the vacant building registration website, the registration will automatically be inactivated.

If fees exist (unpaid) at the time of the deregistration that has to be paid first. Deregistration is not allowed if fees are unpaid.

If an active court case exists for the address deregistration is NOT allowed.

Demolition

Upon notification through the vacant building registration website, the registration will automatically be inactivated.

If fees exist (unpaid) at the time of the deregistration that has to be paid first. Deregistration is not allowed if fees are unpaid.

If an active court case exists for the address deregistration is NOT allowed.

Sale

Upon notification through the vacant building registration website, the registration will automatically be inactivated.

If fees exist (unpaid) at the time of the deregistration that has to be paid first. Deregistration is not allowed if fees are unpaid.

Court cases are NOT checked for deregistration due to sale of property

Release of Lien

Upon notification through the vacant building registration website, the registration will automatically be inactivated.

If fees exist (unpaid) at the time of the deregistration that has to be paid first. Deregistration is not allowed if fees are unpaid.

Court cases are NOT checked for deregistration due to release of lien.
