Forty-six vacant City lots on the Far South Side would be sold to the CTA to support the transit agency’s planned 5.6-mile extension of the Red Line, under a proposal introduced to City Council today by Mayor Brandon Johnson.

Consisting of 27.5 non-contiguous acres and generally located along the planned rail route between 95th and 130th streets in portions of West Pullman, Roseland, Riverdale and Morgan Park, the lots would be sold for $1 each to support the project. The lots are collectively valued at approximately $2.3 million.

In addition to facilitating rail line construction and right-of-way needs, select lots would be used for three of four planned stations -- at 103rd Street, 111th Street and Michigan Avenue -- as well as a new rail yard on 120th Street.

Funding for the $3.6 billion Red Line extension is being supported by a $2 billion federal grant announced this summer, a new Transit Tax Increment Financing district approved last fall, and other public sources.
