Creating accessible and vibrant outdoor dining options in Chicago
Chicago’s Outdoor Dining Program reimagines outdoor dining spaces across the city. The program supports Chicago’s hospitality and food industries by fostering the creation of inviting outdoor dining spaces.
The program is administered by the Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) and the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT). This multi-department collaboration creates outdoor dining options that add to the character of a neighborhood.

Outdoor Dining Types
Sidewalk Cafe
Allows a restaurant or bar to place tables and chairs within a fixed boundary so patrons can dine on the sidewalk.
Full Street Closure
Allows three or more restaurants and bars to close a block for dining in the street
Curb Lane Closure
Allows a restaurant or bar to place tables and chairs within a fixed boundary so patrons can dine in the curb lane.
Permits to serve patrons on private property (e.g. parking lots) are no longer issued. Establishments must obtain proper licenses to serve patrons on their private property. Visit www.chicago.gov/bacp for licensing information.
All outdoor dining permit types are processed through the City of Chicago online permitting portal.
Applicants will need to create an account and submit their full application for the respective permit type through the portal. For eligibility and requirements by permit type, click on “learn more” button below each of the permit types above.
